Traffic signs are visual indicators and boards used on highways, streets, and other transportation areas to regulate, control, warn, and inform road users. They help ensure that drivers, pedestrians, and other users behave appropriately according to road conditions and play a crucial role in preventing accidents.

The function and legal basis of traffic signs

The primary function of traffic signs is to indicate directions, impose restrictions or prohibitions, warn of potential hazards, provide information about road conditions and traffic rules, regulate movement, and enhance road safety.

In Azerbaijan, all traffic signs are designed and applied in accordance with the requirements of the 1968 Vienna and 1971 Geneva Conventions. According to Article 6 of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On Road Traffic," traffic signs are considered normative legal acts with mandatory authority.

Classification of traffic signs

Traffic signs are generally classified into 7 main categories:

  1. Warning signs: These are typically triangular with a red border on a white background. They inform drivers in advance about potential hazards on the road. Examples include slippery road, sharp turn, pedestrian crossing, etc.
  2. Priority signs: These indicate that you have the right of way over other road users. Examples include priority road, merging with a secondary road, yield sign, etc.
  3. Prohibitory signs: Usually circular with a red border on a white background. They restrict or completely prohibit certain movements or road users. Examples include no entry, speed limits, no stopping, etc.
  4. Mandatory direction signs: Typically circular with a blue background. They require drivers to follow a specific direction or adhere to a particular rule. Examples include turn right only, go straight only, bicycle lane, etc.
  5. Informational/directional signs: Usually rectangular or square with a blue background. They provide important information to help road users choose directions and navigate comfortably. Examples include lane directions, parking areas, underground or overground pedestrian crossings, etc.
  6. Service signs: These inform drivers about the presence of service facilities. Typically shown with black symbols on a blue background and placed alongside the road. Examples include restaurants, fuel stations, hospitals, etc.
  7. Additional signs (panels): These are small signs with black text or symbols on a white background, used to clarify, limit, or supplement the meaning of main traffic signs. Examples include dangerous roadside, lane type, wet surface, validity period, etc.

Benefits of traffic signs

Traffic signs enhance road safety, help prevent accidents, and assist drivers and pedestrians in making informed decisions based on road conditions. By creating order and discipline, they also promote greater responsibility among all road users.

Production process

Stages of traffic sign production:

  1. Design and standardization: The shape, size, color, and symbols of the sign are adapted to meet international and local standards.
  2. Material selection: Aluminum, steel plates, and retroreflective coatings are chosen based on quality and durability.
  3. Cutting and shaping: The materials are cut into specific shapes such as circular, triangular, square, etc., according to required dimensions.
  4. Corrosion protection: Metal parts are hot-dip galvanized, and aluminum is coated with powder paint.
  5. Application of reflective film: High-quality materials from Avery Dennison are used for maximum visibility and longevity.
  6. Assembly and packaging: Mounting components are added, the product is packaged for impact protection and prepared for transportation.

Quality and compliance

The color accuracy, reflectivity, durability, and corrosion resistance of the signs are thoroughly tested. Any products that do not meet the standards are removed from production.
